Programme Description
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Land Management and Governance is an interdisciplinary programme designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, values and professional competencies required for efficient, equitable and sustainable management and governance of land. The programme intends to develop graduates who are capable of planning, managing, and governing land in a manner that is legally sound, socially equitable, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable. The programme focuses on four (4) knowledge areas namely Land Tenure, Land Value, Land Use and Land Development; otherwise known as the 4-Ls of land management and governance.
Graduates of the programme will be well prepared for careers in the public and private sectors including government Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs), local governments, private firms, real estate and construction firms, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), development partners, and research institutions, as well as for further postgraduate studies.
The programme will be delivered through a blend of theoretical instruction, practical training, fieldwork, case studies, studio-based projects, problem-based learning and research. In specific domains, the program will collaborate with the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Law, School of Information and Communications Technology, School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Engineering and Architecture at the University of the Gambia (UTG).
At global level, the program is aligned to SDG 5 on Gender Equality, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 on Climate Action, SDG 15 about Life on Land and SDG 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
At continental level, the Bachelor of Science degree in Land Management and Governance is aligned to the African Union (AU) Guidelines for the Development of Curricula on Land Governance in Africa which were endorsed by Ministers, during the Second Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment which took place at the African Union Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 05th to 06th October 2017. The STC called upon AU member states to promote the use of the guidelines and to provide resources in this regard.
Finally, at country level the Bachelor of Science degree in Land Management and Governance is aligned to the National Land Policy (2026 – 2035) whose mission is to ensure efficient, equitable, and sustainable use and management of The Gambia’s land and land-based resources for poverty reduction, wealth creation, and overall socio-economic transformation.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to the programme will meet the following requirements;
Direct Entry (WASSCE/SSCE/IGCSE or its equivalent ): A minimum of five (5) credits, including English Language and Mathematics (mandatory), one subject from the following : Geography/History, Economics or Government/Civics and any One (1) from Natural Sciences and one (1) from Social sciences respectively.
Advanced Entry (HND/Diploma Holders of not less than two years duration: in relevant areas such as Surveying, Planning, Estate management, Agriculture, Law, Land Management) from a recognized institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0. may be admitted subject to credit transfer assessment.
Mature Entry: Applicants 30 years of age with relevant work experience of at least 5 (five) years in the land sector in addition to at least three (3) credits including English and Mathematics may be considered based on oral interview.
International Students: Equivalent qualifications assessed by the UTG Admissions Office and the School concerned with proof of English proficiency, if necessary.
