Established in 1999, the University of The Gambia (UTG) is a growing and dynamic university committed to supporting the socio-economic and environmental transformation of The Gambia and the sub-region through relevant and high-quality education to respond to the Gambia’s National Development Agenda, the African Union Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.

THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
Established in 2009, the School of Arts and Sciences is one of the largest schools at the University of The Gambia. It comprises two main Divisions – Division of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Division of Physical and Natural Sciences. The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a diverse range of courses in Arts and Humanities leading to both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Additionally, it provides opportunities for advanced studies through various Master of Arts/Science degree programs. The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences offers Bachelor of Arts/Science degree programs in multiple disciplines, including Development Studies, English, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Islamic Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology. The Division boasts a team of highly qualified, competent and committed faculty and staff. However, there are significant gaps in human resources, particularly in research competency, within certain core disciplines such as Political Science.
Job Overview – Assistant Lecturer
As Assistant Lecturer, you will be directly answerable to the Head of Department and be responsible for teaching, grading, taking time with students to check and assess their assignments and research works. Engage with the broader Scholarly and Professional Communities and carry out research and produce publications in reputable journals.
Key Responsibilities
- General Administrative Duties:
- Assist in departmental and institutional committees to improve governance and policy-making.
- Assist in course/program content, module or programme implementation, working with others (support staff/academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met and to align with institutional objectives.
- Assist in administrative duties (such as invigilation, admissions, timetabling, examinations, academic hiring and assessment of progress and student attendance) to foster a positive institutional culture.
- Assist in the organisation of external activities such as placements, field trips and international visits to establish partnerships teach at partner institutions or act as Link-Tutor.
- Assist in coordinating the work of others to ensure modules are delivered to the standards required.
- Assist in developing external networks to contribute to student recruitment, student placements, outreach work, generate income through research/consultancy projects and build relationships for future activities.
- Teaching and Learning:
- Assist in developing/updating the curriculum and preparing/updating Course Guides.
- Prepare/update lesson plans and learning/ and teaching materials.
- Deliver lectures and provide tutorial and supervision of student projects, and other support to students.
- Assist in promoting innovative teaching methods and technologies to enhance student learning outcomes.
- Assist in engaging students and other academics to improve teaching methods and to enhance learning experience.
- Set assignments, exams, other tests to assess learning outcomes and provide timely feedback.
- Submit grades for timely processing by the relevant examination Boards.
- Research
- Assist in developing topics for student research, long essays and project work in priority areas to respond to national, regional/global challenges.
- Assist in supervising student research, long essays and other projects to support learning and the development of knowledge.
- Assess student research, long essays to ensure learning outcomes are achieved.
- Assist in coordinating research seminars/workshop to share knowledge, identify research priorities and develop research to support students and other academics.
- Assist in collaborating with colleagues and students, fostering culture of academic inquiry and collaboration.
- Assist in conducting research and develop research projects, grant proposals to generate income and to respond to national, regional and global opportunities.
- Assist in publishing articles and research outputs in reputable conferences, journals and other recognized outlets.
- Assist in promoting effective utilization of labs, equipment and tools for research
- Community Service:
- Assist in School, Departmental, Unit meetings to ensure the programme delivery.
- Assist in supporting the work of School committees, subcommittees and other adhoc groups set up for the running of Units/Departments/Schools.
- Assist in supporting committees and other activities outside the institution delegated by the Dean or Head of Departments.
- Assist in promoting industry up skilling through internship programs.
- Assist in engaging stakeholders to support knowledge transfer and exchange through seminars/workshops, other training and policy dialogues.
E. Professional Development:
- Assist in identification of training and professional development needs.
- Assist in mentoring colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, training opportunities/initiatives and other events in and outside of the institution.
