Masters Programmes

Another new degree program called UTG/LUCCC Program will also be offered at UTG
Farafenni Campus in the early part of 2019. The program will get funding from UNDP
and UNEP, respectively, and the degree programs will range from Certificate to Ph.D
degree levels. The first phase of the UTG/LUCCC Program will run from 2019 to 2030.
The program is a South-South initiative which was created by 11 Least Developed
Countries (LDCs) in the world and The Gambia is one of those LDCs that created the
Program. The objective of the Program is for a long term capacity building in LDCs in
the areas of adaptation and mitigation. When the programs at UTG Farafenni Campus are
launched, there will be funds for Gambian students to enroll in the degree program that is
offered at the time of enrolment.

Admission Requirements
  • A first Degree in Mathematics with at least a CGPA of 3.00 of the University of The Gambia
  • A second class upper Division or a similar Degree of Other Universities in Mathematics recognized by the Senate of The University of The Gambia.

Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Agronomy with specialization in:

  1. Horticulture

  2. Crop Production and Management

  3. Soil Science and Management

Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Masters programme must possess (i) and (ii) as indicated below:

  1. Five (5) Credits at WASSCE / GCE O’ Level at not more than two sittings with credit in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science and any relevant science/social science subject.

  2. Candidates with first degree in Agriculture or related disciplines from UTG with a CQPA of 2.50 on a 4.30 scale or other approved/recognized University with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division with CQPA of 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 scale.

Duration of programme

Full time: 4 Semesters

Part time: 6 Semesters

  • B:Sc degree in Nursing from a recognized University, with a CGPA of 3.2. If the undergraduate CGPA is below 3.2, the student may be required to take an admission test.

A good first Degree in Law (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) or a CGPA of 3.0 and above from the University of The Gambia or other recognized Universities.

WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land
Use) is a large-scale research-focused Climate Service Centre headquartered in Accra,
Ghana and has 10 Lead Universities in West Africa, UTG being one of those 10 Lead
Universities. The UTG/WASCAL Program is designed to help tackle climate change
challenges through education and research, thereby enhancing the resilience of Gambian
citizens, especially Gambian farmers, and environmental systems, respectively. The
Program does so by strengthening the research infrastructure and capacity building at
UTG Farafenni Campus that are related to climate change by pooling the expertise of
Gambians, nine other West African countries, and Germany. UTG Farafenni Campus
already graduated two batches of 10 international students per batch at the M.Sc. degree
level in Climate Change and Education. That M.Sc. degree program is now put on hold
until further notice. In the place of the M.Sc. degree program, UTG Farafenni Campus
will now start a Ph.D. degree program in Climate Change and Education by the first
Quarter of 2019. The whole UTG/WASCAL Program is fully funded by the German
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The UTG/WASCAL Program is
implemented in a collaborative effort by West African and German partners. In summary,
the UTG/WASCAL Program contributes to the education of the next generation of
Gambians and West African scientists and policy makers in the field of climate change
and land management.

A new and an upcoming one-month Certificate in Climate Change Program will be
introduced by UTG Farafenni Campus by the beginning of 2019. This Certificate
program will be tailor-made for any person (Gambian or non-Gambian) who has at least
completed a Grade 12 level of education and can read, write, and operate a computer. The
objective of the Certificate program is to enable every registered student to basically
understand what climate change is and how climate change impacts lives and livelihoods
in The Gambia because climate change impacts ALL sectors of The Gambia economy.
The Certificate Program will be self-funded. That is, registered students have to pay to be
enrolled in the program.

  • Five (5) credits at WASSCE/GCE at not more than two sittings with credits in English Language, Physics, Mathematics and any relevant science/social science subject.
  • First degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications and or related disciplines with a CQPA of 2.60 on a 4.30 scale or other approved scales recognized by the University.

The program is full time, a minimum of four (4) semesters

Candidates from a cognate disciplines such as Development Studies, Political Science, and other Management programs may be considered for admissions. 
Duration of Study
The minimum duration for the MSc program shall be four semesters (two years) for full-time students and six semesters for part-time students.

Entry Qualifications
i). Admission into the M.Sc. programme of the Unit is based on a minimum qualification
of Cum Laude (CQPA of 3.70 to 3.84) or the equivalent of second class (honours) lower
division. Holders of the University of The Gambia degree or a degree from any other
university recognised by the Senate of the University of The Gambia in
chemistry/related disciplines shall be eligible for admission.

ii). Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Chemistry or any related field at a minimum pass level
of CGPA of 3.00 on a 5.00 scale; CQPA of 2.60 on a 4.30 scale; or 60% from any 2 Institution recognized by the Senate of the University of The Gambia, and with relevant experience shall also be considered for admission.

iii). In addition to (i) and (ii) above, a candidate seeking admission into the M.Sc programme MUST have five O-level credit passes at GCE/SSCE/WASSCE in Chemistry, any other two (2) science subjects, Mathematics, and English. Candidates with “A” level credit passes in Chemistry, Mathematics, and English, or Chemistry and any other two (2) science subjects are eligible for admission.

iv). Candidates can only be admitted to a Master's degree if their transcripts for certificates
tendered are received by the Chemistry Department/Graduate School at the time of
consideration of the application for admission.

The duration of the programme shall be four (4) semester (24 Months)


Doctorate Programmes

Candidate seeking admission into PhD programme must possess the combination of (i), (ii) and (iii) as stated below:

  1. Five (5) Credits at WASSCE / GCE O’ Level at not more than two sittings with credit in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science and any relevant science/social science subject.

ii. Candidates with first degree in Agriculture or related disciplines from UTG with a CGPA of 2.50 on a 4.30 scale or other approved/recognized University with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division with CQPA of 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 scale.

iii. Candidates in addition to the B.Sc. degree must have Masters degree in Agriculture or related discipline from recognized Institutions with a minimum CQPA of 3.00 on a 4.30 scale or an average result not below 60%.

iv. Candidates who in addition to i, ii and iii above have successfully completed the M.Phil programme with an average score not below 60%.

Duration of programme

The PhD Agronomy academic programme includes a supervised research project and course work where applicable and both will cover a minimum period of:

Full time: 6 Semesters

Part time: 8 Semesters

The PH.D program provide an advanced and specialized course in Public Administration to open doors to intellectual fulfilment and exciting career in research and teaching. The program is designed to prepare students for consultancy and academic career in the field of Public Administration. Their Knowledge and skill are also developed to be able to conduct indepedent research on Public Administration and governance issues.  
Admission Requirements
An applicant for admission into the PhD Degree Program shall be: 
  • A graduate of the University of The Gambia or any other University recognized by University Senate who possesses a Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Public Administration (with research thesis) and with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00. Candidates from cognate disciplines such as Development Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, Local Government Administration and International Development may be considered for admission. 
  • Required to satisfactorily perform at the admission test to be administered by the Department/University. In addition, Candidates will be required to undergo an interview as may be prescribed by the Department to determine the intellectual capacity and ability of the candidate for the program. 
Note: Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview which shall take the form of an oral presentation of research proposals and the results will guide the Department to take final decision on candidates to be recommended for admission. 
 
Duration of Study 
The minimum period of study for Ph.D program is six (6) semesters.

A candidate seeking admission for the Ph.D. in Law program of University of The Gambia must possess the following Minimum Requirement:

  1. A Master of Law Degree (L.L.M) of University of The Gambia or any other institution recognized by University of The Gambia.

  2. An LLM/MPHIL Law degree of the University of the Gambia or any other University recognized by University of The Gambia.

  3. The candidate must possess the foundational Degree, which is Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B)

  4. The candidate’s transcript must disclose that he has a minimum CQPA of 3.00 points on a scale of 4.30 points or 60%.

  5. The candidate must submit three referees report, attesting to his competence and state of mind to pursue the program.

Philosophy

The Ph.D. in African History is designed to cultivate advanced scholarship, original research, and critical engagement with Africa’s historical experiences, narratives, and intellectual traditions. The programme emphasizes Africa’s agency in world history, the diversity of African societies, and the interconnectedness of historical processes across regions and cultures. It seeks to nurture reflective scholars who can interrogate dominant historiographies, privilege African voices and oral traditions, and generate knowledge that contributes to both academic discourse and societal transformation.

This philosophy is grounded in the conviction that history is not only an academic pursuit but also a vital tool for shaping identity, fostering national and continental consciousness, and informing development policies. The programme therefore balances rigorous theoretical training with methodological innovation and practical relevance.

Objectives

The Ph.D. in African History aims to:

  1. Develop Advanced Research Capacity
  • Equip students with the theoretical and methodological skills necessary to conduct original, independent, and high-quality research in African history.
  1. Strengthen African-Centred Historiography
  • Encourage critical analysis of colonial and Eurocentric perspectives while promoting indigenous knowledge systems, oral traditions, and African epistemologies.
  1. Promote Scholarly Contribution and Publication
  • Train candidates to produce publishable research outputs that expand the frontiers of historical knowledge and engage with global debates.
  1. Foster Intellectual Leadership
  • Prepare graduates for leadership roles as academics, policy advisors, cultural custodians, and thought leaders in African and global contexts.
  1. Enhance Policy Relevance of Historical Knowledge
  • Highlight the importance of history in informing governance, conflict resolution, cultural preservation, and socio-economic development strategies in Africa.
  1. Encourage Comparative and Interdisciplinary Approaches
  • Promote engagement with other disciplines such as anthropology, political science, archaeology, and literature to enrich historical interpretation.
  1. Preserve and Promote Cultural Heritage
  • Instil a commitment to safeguarding African cultural memory, heritage, and identity in the face of globalization and cultural homogenization.

 

Requirements for Admission

Applicants seeking admission into the Ph.D. in African History must meet the following criteria:

  1. Academic Qualification
  • Hold a master’s degree in history or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • The master’s degree must have included a research thesis or dissertation component demonstrating capacity for independent scholarly work.
  • Applicants must present a strong academic record with evidence of excellence in previous graduate studies.
  1. Research Experience
  • Provide evidence of prior research experience in African history or related fields, including published works, dissertations, or ongoing projects.
  1. References
  • Submit at least two confidential academic references from scholars who can attest to the applicant’s research capacity, academic integrity, and suitability for doctoral studies.

 

Duration and Structure of the Programme

Duration

  • The Ph.D. in African History is designed to be completed within a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of five (5) years of full-time study.
  • Part-time enrolment may be permitted, with a maximum completion period of seven (7) years, subject to the university’s regulations.

Structure

The programme is structured to provide students with rigorous training in historical research, theory, and methodology.

  1. Coursework (Year 1)
  • Students will undertake advanced coursework to strengthen their knowledge base and research skills.
  • Coursework will normally be completed within the first year of study.
  1. Seminars and Colloquia (Years 1–3)
  • Candidates are required to participate in research seminars, presenting their work periodically for peer and faculty feedback.
  • Attendance at colloquia, workshops, and conferences is encouraged to foster scholarly exchange and professional development.
  1. Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination (End of Semester – Year 1 )
  • Upon completion of coursework, students will sit for a comprehensive (or qualifying) examination to assess mastery of African historiography, research methods, and thematic areas.
  • Successful completion is a prerequisite for confirmation of Ph.D. candidature.
  1. Research Proposal Defense (Year 2)
  • Candidates must formally present and defend their refined Ph.D. research proposal before a panel of faculty examiners.
  • Approval of the proposal confirms readiness to proceed to the dissertation stage.
  1. Doctoral Thesis (Years 2–3)
  • The core of the programme is an original, substantial, and publishable thesis that makes a significant contribution to African historical scholarship.
  • Research may involve archival work, oral history, fieldwork, or comparative studies, depending on the topic.
  • Candidates will work under the close supervision of qualified faculty as supervisor.
  1. Thesis Submission and Oral Defense (Final Year)
  • Upon completion, the dissertation is submitted for external examination.
  • Candidates must successfully defend their thesis in a viva voce (oral defense) before a panel of internal and external examiners.
