Admission Requirements

Five WASSCE/GCE “O” Level credits including English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science and Biology. For the Environmental Science Programme candidates are required to have Five WASSCE/GCE “O” Level credits including English Language and Mathematics plus any two of the following science subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Transfer students from HDA to BSc at the UTG

Candidates who have successfully completed all the requirements of the HDA course with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.20 and a Pass in English and Maths may be admitted for the BSc degree in Agriculture.

School of Arts and Sciences

DIVISION OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Students eligible to apply for programmes in the Humanities and Social Sciences must have completed West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scoring minimum of five credits in at least three Arts subjects including English Language and any of the science subjects – Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Health Science.

4B.A. Christian Religious Studies  Must have credit in Christian Studies and any two Arts subjects including a science subject.
5B.A. History  Must have credit in History any two Arts subjects including a science subject.
6B.A. Geography  Must have credit in Geography and any two Arts subjects including a science subject.
7B.A. Development Studies  Must have credit in any three Arts subjects including a science subject.
8B.Sc. Political Science  Must have credit in Government or Civic Education and any two Arts subjects including a science subject.

Admission Requirements

Candidates must have 5 WASSCE/GCE “O” Level Credits including English Language and Mathematics. A credit in a Business/Commerce subject is an added Advantage for consideration for Admission.

In addition to the university general admission criteria, the school also has its own internal admission criteria which the SBPA board used for admitting or denying students. These criteria are as follows:

All the regular students must have five (5) credits from WASSCE including English and mathematics. For admission, the applicant must be a commerce student and must at least have two credits in subjects from commerce, one of which must be within the intended field of study.

The students that applied as “Mature students” must have three credits from WASSCE. At least one credit must be either in English or Mathematics. In addition to these, the student must not be less than thirty (30) years of age with minimum (10) years of experience within the intended field of study.

Admission Requirements

I) Five (5) GCE O’Level/WASSCE credits including English Language and Mathematics and a credit in the candidate’s area of study for science-based programmes. For non-Science areas a credit in another science subject can replace the mathematics

II) Four (4) GCE O’Level/WASSCE credits including English Language and HTC in two teaching subjects with a CGPA of 3.2 and above plus  a  “B” grade in their first and second year General Math and English courses at HTC.

III) Mature teachers, (at least 30 years old) should have Three GCE “O” Level/WASSCE credits including English Language and two teaching subjects at HTC level plus a “B” grade in their first and second-year General Math and English courses at HTC.

School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences

Candidates must have Five WASSCE/GCE “O” level credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. (Candidates should note that higher grades- A’s and B’s will improve the chances of admission)

Department of Nursing and Reproductive Health

(1) 4 Year BSC Nursing programme (Nursing General)

To be admitted to the 4 year BSc Nursing degree programme, candidates must be in possession of the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level or the West African Senior School Certificate, with credits in five subjects including English language and Mathematics and at least three Science subjects, i.e Biology, Chemistry, Physics,  and core sciences

(2)-BSc. 2 and half year programme (Nursing General)

Transfer Students with SRN/RN/WAHEB

For the 2 ½  year BSc Nursing degree,candidates must have GCE O’level/WASSCE credits in four subjects including English Language and mathematics  and at least two Science subjects i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics &  core sciences  plus the above mentioned certificates.

(3)-Department of Public Health.

(1)- 4 years BSc in Public and Environmental Health

Admission Requirements

For admission into the program, candidates must be in possession of one (1) of the following;

  1. General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) with credit passes in five (5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics, and at least two (2) biological/physical science subject i.e. Biology, Chemistry, or Physics; which must be obtained in not more than two (2) sittings

                    OR

  1. The West African Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit passes in five (5) subjects as indicated above.
  1. HND holders with at least 3.00 CGPA with five (5) credit passes including English Languages and Mathematics, and at least one (1) biological/physical science subject i.e. Biology, Chemistry, or Physics; in not more than two (2) sittings. HND or equivalents holders in Public and Environmental Health shall be considered for advance standing

School of Information and Communications Technology

  • BSc. Computer Science

Admission Requirements

Basic UTG Entry Requirement:

Five WASSCE/GCE “O” level credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry, Biology plus any other Science Subject.

For the computer Science Programme, candidates must have credits in English, Mathematics at least C4, Physics and any other subjects.

For the Information Systems Programme, candidates must have five WASSCE/ GCE “O” level credits in English Language, Mathematics and one Science subject.

For BSc Telecommunication, candidates must have five WASSCE/GCE “O” Level with credits in English, Mathematics and Physics. Candidates with professional certification in Telecoms or Electronics may be admitted with credits in English, Physics, and pass in Mathematics. The candidate must fulfil the credit requirement in mathematics before graduation. The school may introduce internal exams or interviews as requirement for admission where the number of applications are higher than the school can take.

School of Journalism and Digital Media: Communications, Media and Journalism Undergraduate Programme

  • B.Sc Journalism

Candidates must have 5 Credits including English and a pass in Math. In the absence of a credit in Maths, a credit in any other science subject can be substituted. Candidates with certificates and Diplomas in Journalism (or related fields) or have been practicing will have an added advantage

School of Engineering and Architecture

  • BCBD- Bachelor of Community Building and Design.

Admission Requirements

5 WASSCE Credits including English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and one Technical or Fine Art subject. Qualified Applicants having successfully completed the appropriate GTTI Diploma programmes may be granted Advanced Standing of up to one year.

Faculty of Law

Admission into the LL.B Programme in University of The Gambia is conducted only once every academic year, in the first semester.  Admission requirements for individuals wishing to enroll at the Faculty of Law for the LL.B programme vary, depending on the individual’s educational or professional experience. Individuals wishing to enroll may do so either as Regular Student (non-degree holder) or Direct Entry Student (first degree holder and diploma certificate holder). Additionally, students transferring from a different UTG Faculty or from another University must meet certain requirements. The various categories and their respective requirements are detailed below.

  • Regular Students (Applicants with O-Level/WASSCE Result only)

Applicants to the LL.B programme who have not yet received a degree (i.e. students who have completed Grade 12 examination and passed the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or its equivalent) must have satisfied the minimum UTG entry requirements, as well as those peculiar to the Faculty of Law.  Candidates in this category must possess General Certificate of Education O/Levels or WASSCE or its equivalent with five credit passes in five subjects including English Language and English Literature, obtained at not more than two sittings. At least one of the credits must be a science subject and at least a pass in mathematics. Such a candidate must also undergo an entry examination to be conducted by the Faculty, for which a cut-off mark shall be set as deemed appropriate.

  • Direct Entry (Applicants with First Degrees)

Applicants to the LL.B Programme who already have first degrees taught in the English Language from the UTG or from an accredited University/Institution designated as recognized by University of The Gambia are to receive consideration under this category. The Applicants must have secured a minimum CGPA requirement of 2.7 on a scale of 4.3 or its equivalent in their first degrees. Admission Interviews/Tests are waived for this category of applicants. The General Education Requirement (GER) courses shall also be waived for them if their transcripts show evidence of having taken the courses, or courses equivalent to them in their first degrees.

  • Applicants with Two or Three Years Diploma Certificate

Applicants to the LL.B Programme who already have a two or three years A/Level (minimum of three subjects) or Diploma Certificate from the UTG or from an accredited University or Institution designated as recognized by University of The Gambia are to receive consideration under this category. The Applicant must have secured a minimum of nine (9) points or Credit grade or its equivalent at the end of his/her A/Level or Diploma certificate programme. Such applicant must also possess GCE O/Levels or WASSCE with at least three credit passes in three subjects including English language, a science subject and at least a pass in mathematics. Admission Interviews/Tests are waived for this category of applicants. As a general rule, the applicant shall undergo the General Education Requirement (GER) courses; but may be exempted where there is evidence that such courses had been successfully taken previously.

  • Inter-Faculty/Departmental Transfers

Students from other Schools, Faculties or Departments of University of The Gambia may transfer to the LL.B Programme, provided that they have satisfied the entry requirements to the Faculty of Law for Regular Students (as in “A” above).  In addition, their CGPA must be 2.7 and above.

(E)    Transfer from Other Universities

Students from other universities may transfer to the LL.B Programme at the Faculty of Law, provided that they have satisfied the entry requirements to the Faculty of Law for Regular Students (as in “A” above). The University such transfer-seeking student is coming from must be accredited and recognized as such by University of The Gambia. The transferring student must facilitate the issuance and transmission of his/her academic transcript, plus an endorsement of being in good standing, by and from the previous University to UTG. The CGPA of such transferring student must be 2.7 (60-63%) or its equivalent and above. To qualify for graduation with an LL.B degree, such student must offer courses in the Faculty of Law for a minimum of two years (at least, third year and fourth year).  The transferred student must complete all core courses or have previously completed such courses at his/her previous Institution. As a general rule, the Applicant shall undergo the General Education Requirement (GER) courses; but may be exempted where there is evidence that such courses had been successfully taken previously.
