The University of The Gambia has been chosen as the host of this year’s Annual Conference and General meeting of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU). The decision was reached at their last conference that was held at the Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar.
Prof. Faqir Muhammad Anjum, Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia received a high-powered delegation from the AWAU, led by chairman ahead of the international conference in The Gambia, which is expected to gather more than 20 vice chancellors and over a hundred participants from across Africa for the conference in Banjul.
“It is an honour that we are hosting such an important conference at the UTG. I assure you of my offices utmost support to make this event successful,” Prof. Anjum said.
Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna and Chairman of AWAU Prof. Abdullahi Bala expressed gratitude for the warmly reception. He said, the association was “established in 2011 to address issues on educational advancement, harmonization of curricular, staff exchange and closer integration of the sub region.”
The delegation, which included Prof. Mohammed Sanni Abdulkadir, the Secretary-General and Prof. Temidayo Oladiji, Administrative Secretary had a closed-door working meeting with the senior staff of the UTG and local organizing committee (LOC) of the conference headed by Prof. Pierre Gomez.
The three professors also met with the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Hon. Badara Joof to brief him on the upcoming conference, scheduled for September on the theme “re-positioning higher education in West African for 21st century challenges and opportunities”. They also visited the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) and the Management Development Institute (MDI) before concluding with a press conference.
