Meet an inspiring,hard working,YALI trained fellow and ardent Peace Advocate from our School of Arts & Sciences.

Bakary Sonko is pursuing a degree in Development Studies and works with civil society organisations,including the National Youth Parliament,to promote peace across The Gambia. He wields wide recognition within the country’s debate circles for his oratory prowess.

Currently, Bakary is one of 19 youth leaders chosen from across Africa by the Peacebuilding Institute in Kigali,Rwanda to be trained as global peace ambassadors with skills to prevent and overcome violence and negative ethnicity.

Sonko hopes to leverage on the knowledge gained from the training to intensify efforts to maintain peace and promote political and religious tolerance the Smiling Coast.

In March last year,Sonko was bestowed with the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Spirit Award in Accra,Ghana after an intensive three week training.
