UTG has observed with growing concern developments related to the outbreak of COVID-19
Pandemic. The life-threatening nature and rapid transmission of this disease has been felt
globally. Its impact on the global education systems is also being felt in African countries.
Following the executive directive issued by government to shut down all education center,
including universities, on March 17, 2020, the University of The Gambia constituted a task force charged with the responsibility of mapping out strategies that would ensure the continuation of teaching, learning and research activities through technology-based platforms. UTG authorities further discussed the road map for implementing the online project with major stakeholders including GSM Companies, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, which turned out to be a resounding success.
As the University concludes all the logistical and administrative arrangements to roll out the
project, UTG students will for the first time receive lectures through online delivery methods
with effect from Monday 20th April, 2020. The University shall deliver over 800 lessons to
6,084 students over a three-month period via the Google G-Suite package which includes Google classroom, Google Hangout and Google Jamboard.
All Full Time and Part-Time Lecturers have been provided with internet data cards and dongles to facilitate the delivery of lectures. In the same vein, we have provided all registered students with free 1500 megabytes for their individual and academic research purposes
Even though the COVID- 19 pandemic has disrupted the traditional face-to-face lecture delivery method, it has also presented an opportunity that UTG can further explore to introduce technology based platforms for teaching, learning and research. UTG would move decisively to institutionalize technology based on teaching and learning.
UTG has put a robust monitoring and evaluation systems in place in strict compliance with
approved standards and procedures. We guarantee quality throughout the process. The
University of Gambia wishes to express its gratitude to all stakeholders, in particular to The
Gambia Government through the Ministry of Higher Education Research Science and
Technology (MoHERST), the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs (MoFEA), Chairman
and members of the University Governing Council, the Special Implementation Task Force
under the Chairmanship of Professor Pierre Gomez, UTG IT department and GSM operators
such as Gamcel, Qcell and Africell for the success of this initiative.
