Meet Former Student Leader And Now Staff, Alpha MK Lowe

Alpha MK Lowe is a shining example of well-educated and resourceful graduates from the University of The Gambia, making waves across the country.

Mr. Lowe is the Personal Assistant of the Vice Chancellor of the university. He studied English Language and Economics and graduated with a glittering Suma Cum Laude from the School of Education in 2018. He has years of experience serving as a teacher in different high and junior schools and due to his diligence, was elevated to the positions of a Vice Principal, Principal and a cluster monitor. In these roles, he had contributed immensely in promoting quality among students and school leaders.

Alpha was an ardent debater, who participated in series of debates in the country with several accolades, one of which was becoming the winner of the first Masters’ Round Debate Championship organized by Debate Gambia among tertiary and higher education institutions. In that same championship, Alpha scooped the “Best Speaker Award”. Due to his eloquence and persuasive skills, he was chosen to be part of a solid team that represented the University of The Gambia in the Accra Open Debate Championship in Ghana.

He earned more recognition when he became the President of the University’s students’ union. He displayed great leadership traits and qualities while wielding this crucial position. His council made remarkable achievements such as establishing a legislative and judicial tribunal to ensure accountability within the union. With his foresight, he initiated talks with Jimmy Henry Nzally to build a partnership with the Free University of Brussels, a partnership which is among the flagships of the UTG. He redefined and repositioned students’ unionism in the country. His council is still hailed by many as one of the best in the history of students’ unionism in the UTG.

Currently, Alpha serves as a judge for the Kids Podium and Kids Got Talent, the two biggest children’s programmes in The Gambia. Additionally, this young man is widely sought for in training in debating and public speaking by schools and organisations, which he does for free.

In his post as the Personal Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Alpha executes his duties with passion, professionalism and a great sense of maturity. He is admired by both his supervisors and those he come in contact with in the execution of his administrative roles.
