The Department
The Hard Facilities Unit is a newly established unit dedicated to ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the university’s physical infrastructure. For the avoidance of any doubt Hard Facilities include buildings, non-green areas, campus hard infrastructure, water, energy, lighting and telecommunications infrastructure, and furniture.
Its primary purpose is to support the institution’s operational efficiency and strategic growth by maintaining safe, functional, and sustainable facilities. Additionally, it is responsible for developing and implementing maintenance strategies, overseeing repair and renovation projects, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
The Unit scope also encompasses all aspects of infrastructure management, including the upkeep of existing facilities and the integration of the newly established Faraba Banta Campus.
As the university continues to expand, the department plays a critical role in addressing the complexities of managing a diverse and extensive infrastructure portfolio, adapting to evolving demands, and aligning its operations with the institution’s long-term objectives.
Job Overview
The University of The Gambia (UTG) is expanding its teaching and research programs with the commencement of classes at the new Faraba Banta Campus. Consequently, the University of The Gambia (UTG) is seeking skilled and experienced multi-disciplinary persons to join our Hard Facilities Management Unit. The successful candidates will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the physical infrastructure of all UTG Facilities or Properties, both owned and rented. As members of the Facilities Management team, the multi-disciplinary persons will work closely with the Hard Facilities Manager (HFM) to address all painting, tile laying and masonry-related needs, ensuring that our learning and teaching environments remain well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspection and Assessment:
- Receive and respond to reports of tile laying, masonry, and painting-related defects from beneficiaries.
- Conduct periodic inspections of buildings to identify and verify general defects.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports with recommendations for addressing identified issues and submit them to the Hard Facilities Manager.
- Estimate the quantity of materials needed to address defects and submit estimates to the HFM
- Outlining technical specifications for all Tile laying, Masonry and Painting equipment or materials required for maintenance or new works when required.
2. General Maintenance:
- Execute all painting, tile laying and masonry relating to surface finishing maintenance work on UTG buildings, including campuses and rented properties
- Properly prepare surfaces for painting, applying paint, stains, varnishes, and sealants using tools like brushes, spray guns, and rollers.
- Repair cracks and surfaces using fillers.
3. Acquisition of Buildings for Renting:
- Assist HFM in inspecting potential rental properties for suitability.
- Produce technical reports and provide recommendations to the Property/Contracts Committee.
4. Procurement and Supervision:
- Assist in the coordination of procuring general tools and materials relating to painting, tile laying and masonry works for maintenance and new projects.
- Identify the need for specific maintenance work and outline technical specifications for equipment or materials.
- Monitor the implementation of university construction contracts relating to painting, tile laying and masonry by external contractors to ensure compliance with contractual quality and recommend payments to external contractors for satisfactorily completed works.
5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Standards:
- Assist in ensuring appropriate health, safety, and environmental standards are maintained during all general maintenance-related activities, protecting the well-being of campus occupants and users.
