Celebrating UTG: Dr. Ousman Bajinka – A Global Scientist Rooted from the University The Gambia

From the lecture halls of the University of The Gambia to leading laboratories across Asia, Europe, and North America, Dr. Ousman Bajinka embodies the spirit of UTG’s mission: Knowledge, Truth and Development. Today, as a Senior Lecturer and internationally recognised microbiologist, his journey reflects both personal excellence and the growing global footprint of UTG scholars.

Dr. Bajinka’s story began at the University of The Gambia, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. What started as a passion for understanding microbes and disease has evolved into a distinguished career in microbiology and biomedical research. With more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications in high-impact journals, his work now contributes to global conversations on infectious diseases, cancer biology, and the future of personalized medicine.

After completing his undergraduate studies at UTG, Dr. Bajinka pursued a Master’s degree in Turkey and later earned his PhD in Microbiology from Central South University in China. His doctoral research explored the complex “lung-brain axis,” revealing how respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common respiratory infection, can trigger changes not only in the lungs but also in the brain. This groundbreaking work opened new pathways for understanding how infections can influence neurological health, placing him at the forefront of interdisciplinary microbiology and neurovirology research.

His postdoctoral research at Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Cancer Hospital further expanded his focus to predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (3PM). By combining multi-omics technologies and big-data analytics, Dr. Bajinka has worked on improving how respiratory viral infections and chronic diseases such as hypertension are detected, prevented, and managed. His research continues to bridge laboratory discoveries with real-world clinical and public health applications.

Yet, beyond his impressive scientific record, Dr. Bajinka remains deeply committed to education and capacity building in The Gambia. At UTG, he teaches medical microbiology and biochemistry, mentors students, supervises research, and actively contributes to strengthening the university’s research culture. Many of his students are now engaging in grassroots research projects and pursuing careers in health and science, inspired by his example.

Dr. Bajinka also serves as a science ambassador for The Gambia on the global stage. He has represented the country as a Young Ambassador for the American Society for Microbiology and currently serves as a Country Representative for the Africa Bioethics Network. He is a co-founder of the Gambian Society of Microbiology, an initiative dedicated to strengthening local scientific collaboration and professional development. Through these roles, he continues to build bridges between Gambian scientists and the international research community.

Fluent in multiple languages and experienced across several continents, Dr. Bajinka represents a new generation of globally connected African scientists who remain rooted in their home institutions. His academic journey, from UTG to research centers in China, Italy, South Africa, and the United States, demonstrates the power of perseverance, curiosity, and international collaboration.

For the University of The Gambia, his achievements are a source of pride and inspiration. They highlight what is possible when local talent is nurtured and supported to engage with the global scientific community. As he continues to publish, teach, and mentor, Dr. Ousman Bajinka is not only advancing microbiology and global health, he is also shaping the next generation of UTG scientists.

In celebrating Dr. Bajinka, UTG celebrates the impact of its alumni and staff who carry the university’s values into the world while remaining committed to national development. His journey reminds students that from Banjul to the global stage, excellence can grow from home.

UTG celebrates Dr. Ousman Bajinka, a scientist, educator, and global ambassador for Gambian research and innovation.
