Master in Public Administration (MPA) (Professional)
The School of Graduate Studies and Research, University of The Gambia is pleased to invite applications for admission into the above-named programmes commencing the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year.
(1) Master of Science (MSc) Programme
Philosophy and Objectives of the Course
The Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree programme provides an advanced and specialized course in Public Administration. The programme offers outstanding students the opportunity to make significant and enduring contributions to the practice and teaching of Public Administration, especially those that have aspirations of taking a doctoral degree in the field of Public Administration. The programme is designed such that it offers broadly based and interdisciplinary training that prepares students’ skills and knowledge for a doctoral degree in the field especially in conducting both analytical and empirical research.
Requirements for Admission
- For the M.Sc. degree, candidates are to be graduates of the University of The Gambia or any other recognised University with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in Public Administration. Candidates from cognate disciplines such as Development Studies, Political Science, and Management, may be considered for admission.
- A holder of a Master in Public Administration (MPA) degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 from the University of The Gambia or any other recognised University may be considered for admission.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview which shall take the form of an oral presentation of research proposals and the results will guide the Department in taking a final decision on candidates to be recommended for admission.
Duration of study
The minimum duration for the MSc programme shall normally be four semesters (two years) for full-time study and six semesters (three sessions) for part-time study.
Programme of Study and Research
The programme of study for the MSc degree course is as specified and approved by the University Senate.
(2) Master in Public Administration (MPA) (Professional)
Philosophy and Objectives of the Course
The objective of the MPA programme is to provide an advanced and specialized course in Public Administration and Management. This course is particularly available for the mid-career officers who have had several years of practice and experience and who are reaching the higher levels of administrative management. The programme is designed such that syndicate group discussion, case study analysis and close interactions between the faculty and participants will be facilitated. This will enhance sharing of professional experiences among participants. The curriculum is also structured to accommodate courses in contemporary issues that will develop the participants in specific areas of specialization.
Requirements for Admission
An applicant for admission to this professional Master’s degree shall be a graduate of the University of The Gambia or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 (in any field of study) to be eligible for admission. A holder of a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration with not less than a 2.00 cumulative grade point average may also be considered for admission.
Duration
The duration of the course is two years (three semesters’ coursework and a semester for project/long essay writing). The long vacation (after second-semester examinations) is for field attachment leading to the writing of a Field Report.
