The Main Library for the University is located at the Brikama Campus. The other branch libraries are the Business and Law Library in Kanifing and the Medical and Health Sciences Library in Banjul. The Library collection covers recommended textbooks on all the subjects taught at the University. The collection includes dictionaries, directories, CD-ROMs, journals, newspapers, fiction books and other materials. The Library also subscribes to many useful online databases. The books on the shelves are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. Periodicals are displayed separately in their own section and back issues are arranged in alphabetical sequences by date.
Using the Library Library membership As a registered member of the University you have full access and borrowing rights to the resources available in the Library. Your University ID card incorporates your library membership and you must bring it with you whenever you visit the Library. Your Library membership lasts for the duration of your course. Students from other institutions are welcome to use the Library for reference purposes.
You must bring your University ID card to the Library counter when you want to borrow a book. Books can be borrowed for 3 (three) weeks or 1 (one) week. Students may borrow up to 3 (three) books and staff up to 5 (five) books at a time. Periodicals are for reference use only.
Books must be returned to the Library counter at any time during the Library opening hours.
Books may be renewed if they are not required by another borrower and provided your borrowing privileges have not been suspended because of outstanding charges, overdue books or you have exceeded your loan entitlement. Â
Fines are charged to encourage the prompt return or renewal of library materials and to increase their availability to all library users. You will be required to pay charges for any lost library books you borrowed and you will need to settle your fines before you can borrow more items. To avoid library charges please return your books on time.
The Library computers provide access to Microsoft office programs, the Internet and a range of software. You will be unable to print your work from these computers. Please bring along a USB memory pen to save your work.
The charge for photocopying is D1.00 (one Dalasi) per A4 page and D2.00 (two Dalasis) for A3 size paper. Please ask the Library staff for assistance if you wish to use the photocopier. Â
The Library subscribes to many useful online databases such as, JSTOR, HINARI, OARE, AGORA, TEEAL and many more. The UTG Library Guide to Online Resources lists good quality and evaluated subject gateways, electronic journal databases and other relevant web resources.
There are many useful resources on the Internet to support your research. The Librarian offers a range of training on using the information resources in the Library and provides ongoing information skills support to staff and students. If you require specific help in using Library resources you may book an appointment by telephone on 3650025 or email the University Librarian.
